Free Diabetes Prevention Program Begins Monday, Aug. 24
One out of three U.S. adults has prediabetes, and nine out of 10 don't know they have it. Preventing diabetes reduces chances of other chronic diseases, such as heart disease, stroke and some cancers. If you have prediabetes, you can take control and reduce your risk of developing diabetes. St. Catherine of Siena Hospital in Smithtown and the Suffolk County Department of Health will conduct a year-long educational series to reduce the risk of diabetes, including lifestyle coaching and support. The program is free of charge and starts Monday, Aug. 24. The program will meet from 5 to 6:30 p.m. most Mondays for a year at St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation on Route 25A in Smithtown.

Learn to Be Tobacco Free Series Begins Thursday, Aug. 27
Get free guidance, support and strategies to quit using tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, e-cigarettes and chewing tobacco. This Suffolk County Department of Health program is based on federal guidelines for treating nicotine dependence: biological, psychological and behavioral.

The Huntington Senior Center's Initial Bereavement Group meets Mondays from 10:30 a.m. to noon. It helps individuals who have recently experienced the death of a spouse work through grief, examine feelings and discover inner strengths -- all in a caring and supportive setting. The separate Next Step Bereavement Group for Spousal Loss, which meets Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to noon, is for individuals who have completed the Initial Bereavement Group sessions. This support group encourages individuals to take steps toward new routines and activities. Legal Services of Long Island will provide free legal advice on several topics for eligible Suffolk County residents. Income limits apply. Advice will be given on Article 17A and Article 18 guardianship; bankruptcy; divorce, custody and support; estate matters; suspended or revoked driver's licenses; deed and title matters, and income tax issues. Long Islanders can get free legal advice and help filing of petitions in matters of consumer debt; child and spousal support; custody and visitation; and name-change applications. English and Spanish speakers are welcome. Volunteer law students supervised by attorneys will meet with individuals from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, June 26, at the Nassau County Supreme Court complex at 100 Supreme Court Drive in Mineola. - Everyday Spanishmeets online via Zoom. This conversation group focuses on building listening skills, improving comprehension, and mastering key vocabulary to help you start conversing in Spanish immediately. The class is open to newcomers and experienced speakers. It meets on Tuesdays at 5:15 p.m.
- Dynamic Englishhelps participants develop English vocabulary, grammar, reading and pronunciation in a friendly conversation group. The class is intended for intermediate English learners. It meets on Thursdays at 7 p.m. at the East Northport library, 185 Larkfield Rd.
- Quick Readsmeets via Zoom. This informal monthly reading group is designed for intermediate English language learners and those who would like to develop literacy. The reading selection is emailed a week before the meeting. (Print copies are available at the East Northport reference desk.)
- Pronunciation Practicemeets via Zoom. The class seeks to help participants improve English pronunciation skills with a certified speech-language pathologist and accent modification trainer. You will learn how to use standard American English sounds and strategies to get your point across. It meets on Mondays at 7 p.m.
Carpenters Recruiting Apprentices -- Underway Through September 2026
The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for the New York City District Council of Carpenters will conduct a recruitment from Sept. 10, 2025, through Sept. 9, 2026, for 25 carpenter (piledriver/dockbuilder) apprentices; 20 Linoleum, resilient tile and carpet layer apprentices; three cabinet maker apprentices; and 10 millwright apprentices. Applicants must attend an in-person information session at the New York City District Council of Carpenters Training Center at 395 Hudson St., second floor (Clarkson Street entrance), Manhattan. Information sessions will be held on the second Wednesday of each month from 9 to 10 a.m. (except in December and January) for all trades.
