"The youth of today are not as superficial as some think. They want to know what life is really all about." - Pope Benedict, Forward to the YouCat.
Faith Formation begins at home with the family, but as children approach the first grade, it is a good time for parents to think about formal Religious Education. Parents are asked to remember that even though formal religious education begins in first grade, it does not replace going to Mass and catechists do not replace parents as the primary teachers of the faith.
As Christians, we have a moral obligation, by the Third Commandment, to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. Parents especially should be committed to teaching and living out our faith, setting an example to their children. Religious Education will be of little, or even no, benefit to your children if what they are taught in the classroom is not reinforced in the home. This is to say that what is taught in the classroom is actually just a supplement to the lessons being taught by the family.
We recommend that parents communicate with their child's catechist to stay informed of the lessons and activities taking place in the class. We also encourage you to reach out to the clergy of the parish if you have any questions about our faith. By combining the efforts of the religious educators with those of the parents, we can be assured that we are doing our best to produce young adults who will continue their journey after Confirmation and go forth with a strong connection to our Church and a deep, personal relationship with Christ.
