One out of three U.S. adults has prediabetes, and nine out of 10 don't know they have it. Preventing diabetes reduces chances of other chronic diseases, such as heart disease, stroke and some cancers. St. Catherine of Siena Hospital and the Suffolk County Department of Health will conduct a year-long educational series to reduce the risk of diabetes, including lifestyle coaching and support. A program from the Suffolk County Department of Health Services helps pregnant women and those parenting children younger than age 2. The program aims to help women stay healthy to reduce preterm births, low birth weights, infant mortality and maternal mortality. Community health workers provide education, case coordination and home visits to pregnant and parenting women, and they coordinate health and social service connections. The program serves women in select areas, including the 11725 ZIP code in Commack. All women in those areas are eligible, regardless of income or immigration status. The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Roofers, Waterproofers, and Allied Workers, Local Union 154, is recruiting five roofer apprentices. The Town of Huntington Senior Center provides an abundance of activities and services, including adult day care, free or low-cost hot lunches, exercise programs, day trips and much more. A program from Suffolk County and the Town of Huntington provides non-medical services for town residents 60 and older who are unable to perform home management tasks. Case managers determine an individual’s eligibility based on income and other expenses. In some cases, there is no cost. In other cases, participants share the cost. Home aides are vetted by participating agencies. There is a waiting period of several weeks.

Services provided include:

  • Making and changing beds
  • Dusting and vacuuming rooms used by the client
  • Light cleaning of the kitchen, including dish washing, clearing refrigerator of spoiled food, sweeping and floor mopping
  • Light cleaning of bathroom
  • Compiling shopping lists and shopping
  • Laundry
  • Light meal preparation

A government-sponsored program helps residents 60 and older shop for groceries online and have them delivered free of charge. Priority is given to homebound individuals who are frail, low income, minority, have disabilities or have diminished ability to perform daily tasks. The program does not pay for groceries.
