In early 2025, the Town of Huntington Community Development Agency opened its waiting list for affordable housing. The Multiple Sclerosis Navigator provides support for people affected by multiple sclerosis. It helps those individuals connect to resources as unique as their needs, such as newly diagnosed support, advanced care needs, finance and resource issues, family support, symptom and treatment strategies, employment and insurance challenges.

The Willing Hearts, Helpful Hands Caregiver Support Program provides free assistance and support to individuals and families caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia. It offers care consultations with licensed social workers, support groups, education and training, respite care, volunteer services and enrichment activities. The program also provides volunteers who provide respite time for caregivers, as well as a financial scholarship for paid respite care. Cell-Ed, a program sponsored by the New York State Office for New Americans, helps users build skills for life and work, learn English or Spanish, and take their next steps in work and education. No internet connection is required. Cell-Ed is free, secure and available every day at all hours. Open Door Exchange in Port Jefferson Station reopens Monday, Sept. 9. The exchange provides gently used furniture free of charge to individuals and families in need. Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders affects many women during pregnancy and after giving birth. Symptoms may include crying, sleeping problems, appetite disturbances, anxiety, loss of enjoyment of activities, poor fetal attachment and fear of harming the baby or yourself. The Huntington Drug and Alcohol Counseling & Education Center provides comprehensive prevention, education and treatment services to youth and adults. It is a licensed outpatient chemical dependency treatment and prevention provider at the Huntington Youth Bureau, third floor, 423 Park Avenue, Huntington. Medicaid and most insurance are accepted.  No one is turned away, as sliding-scale fees are enacted for uninsured and underinsured. Initial assessment fee is $50, which includes a psychiatric evaluation. Treatment services are individualized and include evaluation, assessment, referral as well as group/individual/family counseling.  Specialty offerings are available for adolescents, those with gender-related issues, impaired driving offenders, and individuals whose primary language is Spanish. Families having trouble accessing education for students with special needs can seek help from the Education and Disability Rights Project of Nassau Suffolk Law Services. The project represents students with disabilities between the ages of 5-21 in special education matters, including attendance at committee on special education meetings, resolution sessions and impartial hearings. The project also helps students in issues pertaining to residency and homelessness and helps adults with developmental disabilities to secure eligibility and services through the Office of People with Developmental Disabilities. New York State offers affordable health care for New Yorkers with lower incomes. In some cases, it costs nothing. The Essential Plan has no deductible and offers the same benefits as other health plans, including doctor visits (including specialists), tests, prescription drugs, and inpatient and outpatient hospital care. Co-payments are kept low or waived. Preventive services, like routine doctor exams and screenings, are free of charge.

The Catholic Health Fiat (Let It Be Done) Pregnancy Support Program provides free, non-judgmental support and services 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, to couples with fertility issues as well as to any pregnant woman in need, regardless of age, religious belief or affiliation, immigration status or marital status. FIAT gives guidance on community services  to continue a pregnancy, such as local agencies that provide food, shelter and clothing.  Resources concerning care for mother and baby during and after pregnancy are available.

The Town of Huntington Senior Center at 423 Park Ave. provides day care to individuals who are experiencing decreased levels of physical and cognitive abilities, including those with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease who need of supervision in a safe and structured environment. The service is available weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Members may attend one to five days a week. A continental breakfast and nutritious main meal are served. Staff provide a structured program of daily activities, crafts, parties with live entertainment, and day trips to help maintain physical and cognitive abilities, socialization, companionship and enhanced self-esteem. The nonprofit service Cleaning for a Reason will arrange a limited number of household cleanings free of charge for anyone of any age battling cancer.

Volunteers from Rebuilding Together Long Island perform repairs for qualifying homeowners.

Volunteers do carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications, including wheelchair ramps, and bathtub and doorway alterations.

Clients must qualify based on limits to income and assets (extra allowances are made for veterans). Labor and materials are free of charge.
