The Supportive Services for Veteran Families organization provides help to veterans who are homeless or at risk of losing shelter.
For qualifying veterans, the organization provides one-on-one guidance to locate housing and employment, apply for government benefits, receive rental assistance and obtain emergency food. Call 631-227-0777.
Accessory Apartment Programs
The Huntington Community Development Agency and the Long Island Housing Partnership are offering grants of up to $125,000 to help eligible residents create or improve accessory apartments in their homes.

Legal Help for Supplemental Needs Trusts and Housing
Legal Services of Long Island helps low-income households establish Supplemental Needs Trusts to eliminate the Medicaid spend-down. The organization also helps homeless families obtain rent supplements from the Department of Social Services to enable them to leave shelters or retain permanent housing. Call 631-232-2400.
Free Adult Depends, Pull-ups and Bed Chuck Pads Available
Adult Depends, pull-ups and bed chuck pads are available for free at the Society for Lending Comforts to the Sick at 71 Blydenburgh Ave., Smithtown. (At the intersection of Blydenburgh and Bellemeade Avenues, one block north of Main Street.) Call 631-265-1674.

Help With Transportation
The St. Anthony of Padua Parish Outreach van provides rides to pharmacies, grocery stores, medical appointments and Mass to people who need transportation. Service is free of charge Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for people who live in the bounds of our parish. Riders are taken as far as Huntington, Commack, Northport and Centerport. We also provide rides to Sunday Mass at our parish. The van has a wheelchair lift. Call 631-261-1695 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday-Thursday to schedule a ride. Huntington Area Rapid Transit (HART) provides paratransit service to people who are prevented by disability from using HART’s regularly scheduled, fixed-route transit buses, and to non-driving town residents 60 and older who do not have access to transit services. Suffolk County Accessible Transportation (SCAT) provides shared ride, curb-to-curb service for low fares every day to Suffolk residents who are unable to use the fixed-route public bus service. (Service does not include trips that begin and end in the Town of Huntington, which are served by the town’s HART service. See above.) To use SCAT, you must be registered as an "Americans With Disabilities Act eligible rider." Most rides are within Suffolk County, but SCAT customers can also travel from Suffolk to Nassau County by transferring to Nassau's Able Ride service or connecting to the LIRR. Help for Dementia and Caregivers
The Alzheimer's Disease Resource Center in East Islip provides care, support and educational programs for families coping with Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias.
Free services include care consultations, information and referrals, support groups, museum visits, music and art therapy, and therapy programs for caregivers and loved ones.

Legal Assistance for Adults in Care Facilities
Legal Services of Long Island represents residents of adult care facilities in legal matters. An attorney provides home visits, training for residents and advocate groups, and advice by phone and in person. Relevant legal issues include evictions, finances and debt, public benefits, medical coverage, living conditions, resident rights, advanced directives and more. The project handles rights issues without regard to a resident's income. It prioritizes clients below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines for other services. Home Share Program
The Home Share program of the Family Service League connects adults who need affordable housing with homeowners 55 and older who have an empty bedroom and living space to share. Home sharers often help with chores for little or no rental charge while providing homeowners with companionship, safety and security.

Food Pantry
The food pantry at St. Anthony of Padua, which is run by St. Vincent de Paul, distributes bags of groceries the first and third Friday of each month (10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.) and on the first and third Sunday of each month (10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.).
The food pantry is located near the Parish Outreach office in the basement of Trinity Regional School.
If you are unable to be there on one of these scheduled days, emergency food bags can be picked up Monday – Thursday 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Town of Huntington – Residential Repair Program for Seniors
The Town of Huntington’s Residential Repair Program provides minor household repairs to seniors who reside in the Town of Huntington and are at least 60 years of age. The service is available to homeowners. Priority is given to those elderly who are frail, low income, minority, and handicapped to help them live independently in their homes. Legal Services of Long Islands's Public Benefits Unit provides legal assistance to persons who experience problems with public benefits programs that are administered by the local Departments of Social Services, including:
- Welfare (TANF and Safety Net)
- Medicaid
- Food Stamps (SNAP)
- Child Care Assistance
- HEAP
- Emergency shelter for the homeless
- Unemployment insurance appeals and overpayments
- Other emergency assistance programs

Nassau Suffolk Law Services' Consumer Debt Legal Assistance Project provides legal assistance to persons who are experiencing consumer debt problems, especially in matters of credit card and medical debt, including nursing home debt. Legal Assistance for Housing-Related Problems
Nassau Suffolk Law Services, in partnership with Empire Justice Center, can now assist Nassau and Suffolk residential tenants with housing-related legal problems (like eviction) and a household income of up to 80% of the Area Median Income. Services are available through this partnership regardless of immigration status. Please call the office closest to you to see if you are eligible for legal services. Interpreters are available. Suffolk and Nassau County’s Department of Social Services (DSS) has programs available to provide help with receiving shelter or rent arrears to prevent homelessness. Volunteers Welcome!
The St. Anthony of Padua Parish Outreach Office needs volunteers. Our volunteers provide referrals to social services, budget counseling, housing guidance, transportation via our van and more. Helping Seniors Stay in Their Homes
The Hands on Huntington program helps people 60 and older maintain their quality of life and independence in their homes. The program is available for certain areas of East Northport (south of Pulaski Road and west of Elwood Road). Its services include:
- A nurse who monitors blood pressure, arranges physician visits and advocates for clients with medical providers.
- Help to apply for town bus service for disabled individuals and non-driving senior citizens.
- Help with applications for entitlement programs and property tax reductions.
- Information about health and prescription insurance.
- Help with health care proxies.
- Information about community, county and state services.
